Chime Title

Chime, born in February 1989, was the first sound utility of its type for the Macintosh or PC.

Chime is Macintosh software that plays sounds at regular intervals, much like the chimes of traditional clocks and belltowers. The earliest version played a single beep sound at the hour - there were no other features. The most recent version plays any sound at any quarter hour interval or multiple intervals, tolls the hour (plays the same number of times as the number of the hour), and is the only sound utility for a computer that plays ships bells, or nautical chimes.

A chiming sound function is now available for most computer platforms. Chimes have been part of the Macintosh system software for several generations, and Windows includes a chiming function as well. If you own a Macintosh and would like to try Chime, the current version (4.0.7) is compatible with all models of the Macintosh from the Mac Plus forward, and is available, along with a fine collection of appropriate chiming sounds, from the links below.

Note: For System 8.1 and above, the 'Chime Sounds' folder needs to be moved from the System Folder to the root level of the hard drive.
